From Bucharest to Chișinău: Why Moldova’s 2025 Elections Matter – COMMENTARY

What Moldova’s upcoming elections reveal about the future of European democracy and resilience in the face of foreign interference

25 June 2025

As Moldova prepares for critical parliamentary elections in 2025, the stakes for its democratic future and EU integration have never been higher. With Russian disinformation on the rise, the lessons from Romania’s recent electoral outcome may prove vital.

The 2025 Romanian presidential election delivered a surprising result. Defying political forecasts, pro-European candidate Nicușor Dan defeated far-right challenger George Simion with 54% of the vote.

But this outcome came after a series of dramatic developments. In the first round of an election held in December 2024, a relatively unknown, pro-Russian far-right candidate Călin Georgescu scored a shock victory, prompting widespread concern over electoral integrity. The result was ultimately annulled due to confirmed interference by Russian-backed actors, forcing a rerun of the presidential race.
