Former Taiwanese President Visits Lithuania as Bilateral Ties Face Uncertainty – QUICK TAKE

A strategic tour at a critical moment

13 May 2025

Former Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen’s visit to Vilnius comes as Lithuania’s new government reassesses its ties with Taiwan, raising questions about whether past solidarity will translate into future cooperation.

Former Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) has begun a diplomatic tour of Europe, with Lithuania as her first stop. The visit highlights Vilnius’ key – yet increasingly contested – role in Taipei’s European engagement strategy. Tsai’s tour, which also includes the Copenhagen Democracy Summit in Denmark and meetings in the United Kingdom, comes amid political transition in Lithuania and rising domestic scrutiny of the Baltic state’s relationship with Taiwan.

Though Tsai officially stepped down in May 2024 after serving two presidential terms, she continues to play an informal diplomatic role for Taiwan, recently attending international fora such as the GLOBSEC Forum in Prague.
