At the end of October, the European Parliament approved a non-binding resolution pushing for a stronger partnership with Taiwan. The MEPs asked for an investment deal and support for the island which is under Chinese pressure.
Two weeks later, the formal support was not only symbolically put in place but made manifest when the first official delegation of the European Parliament arrived in Taiwan. It was proposed by Czech MEP Markéta Gregorová, a member of the EP Special Committee on Foreign Interference in all Democratic Processes in the European Union, including Disinformation (INGE).
Gregorová thinks that the EU can learn a lot from Taiwan, and she thinks that the visit was very important step for the EU. ‘China said that we made a mistake and we should fix it. Otherwise, the EU-China relations will be damaged irreversibly. I find it funny because China has been damaging the relations for a long time.’
Rastislav Kačmár: You proposed a visit to Taiwan at a time when China is more aggressive towards the island; it’s also strongly opposing Taiwan’s diplomatic efforts abroad. What motivated you?
