Europe found itself in a unique position after Trump’s intervention in Venezuela. But what we make of it is a matter of perspective, choice and willingness to bite.
‘THIS IS OUR HEMISPHERE’ – proclaimed the United States (US) Department of State on its Facebook page in large red letters, two days after American military commandos abducted President Nicolás Maduro and his wife from Venezuela’s capital.
US President Donald Trump gave the order for this intervention, which clearly disregarded international law, without informing the United States Congress and at his press conference left no doubt that the main objective was to gain control over Venezuela’s oil wealth. So much so that when a journalist asked, he confirmed: while he did not consult the American legislature, he did coordinate with major American oil companies before the operation. The president even gave this surprisingly honest new foreign policy approach a name: the ‘Donroe Doctrine’.
