Romania to Rerun Presidential Elections: Shaky Democracy on NATO’s Eastern Flank

Europe is not in for just one, but successive difficult winters due to energy troubles. Renewables can be the silver bullet in the crisis and the EU embargo on Russian crude oil imports kicks in as countries in Central Europe continue to struggle with dependency on Russian imports and debilitating corruption.
The upcoming 19 December deadline of the Council of EU Member States to vote on the European Commission’s recommendation to withhold €7.5 billion from EU’s cohesion funds made yesterday (November 30) sends a message that the EC is taking seriously corruption and what’s at stake. It is “finally cracking down [on those] destroying democracy”, as MEP and Green negotiator for the Rule of Law Daniel Freund noted.
