Bulgaria Opts for Change

Democratic Security Outlook: 15-21 November

15 November 2021

After a third election in a year, Bulgarians vote for anti-corruption leaders that may be able to end the year-long political deadlock. Huge numbers of Russian troops have built up along the Ukrainian border as Washington warns of a possible invasion.

The migrant stand-off on Poland’s border with Belarus combined with movements of Russian troops on the Ukrainian border spells security woes for the region. The EU is ready to impose a fifth package of sanctions despite threats from Minsk to cut off energy supplies and goods flowing via Belarus. Actions of the Belarusian regime have reaped condemnation from the West at the UN Security Council while Moscow remains firmly by Minsk’s side and propagates the narrative that Western policies in the Middle East are at fault. Interestingly, none of the right-wing allies of Poland’s ruling PiS party in CEE explicitly mention Belarusian and Russian leaders in reference to the migration crisis.
