A Universal Strategy Is Needed to Boost Europe’s Democratic Security

Brussels must use the toolbox it has and pass new mechanisms to reverse the democratic backsliding in the EU

12 December 2023

The EU values related to the rule of law and corruption have been attacked by non-democratic actors within the bloc, eroding the people’s trust in institutions and the union itself. A universal strategy which can be implemented at the national level is necessary to combat this decline in democratic standards.

Fidesz and Law and Justice degraded democratic institutions in the countries they rule and put the fundamental rights of EU citizens in danger.

By undermining domestic checks and balances, they’ve exposed their countries – and the whole of the EU – to strategic corruption by Russia and China.
