Viktor Orbán’s New Magic Campaign Weapon: “Protecting Sovereignty”

Viktor Orbán’s shrewd talent for perpetuating a permanent campaign mode in Hungary has a new slogan, “Protecting Sovereignty”.

Apparently, “protecting sovereignty” might be one of the key motives of Fidesz’s campaign for the upcoming period, with new legislation tabled for Tuesday.

As a logical continuation of former anti-Brussels and Stop Soros campaigns, it builds on the “besieged fortress” mentality Fidesz successfully nurtured for more than a decade and the familiar enemy pictures it paints.

The bill to come

In late September, Máté Kocsis, the leader of Fidesz’s parliamentary group, announced that a “sovereignty protection” bill should be passed in autumn “against left-wing journalists, pseudo-NGOs and dollar politicians”.
