Ukrainian Spring Binds Europe Together

Accelerated election campaigns across the region could lead to a deeper polarisation of CEE societies

Ukraine’s future has become intertwined with that of the EU, as the continent awaits the scale of Ukraine’s anticipated spring offensive and Russia turns into a war dictatorship.

Reports of the Russian army strengthening its positions around Crimea. Institute for the Study of War reported on erected defensive lines in Crimea while Ukrainian authorities claim Russia is preparing evacuation plans from the occupied areas in Southern Ukraine. The assassination of a pro-Russian blogger in Moscow could signal internal disputes among pro-war hardliners inside the Kremlin, analysts point out. Zelenskyy is visiting Warsaw on 5 April as the US provides additional security assistance to Ukraine worth 2.6 billion USD.

Christine Karelska on Ukraine’s much-discussed spring offensive and its implications:

It is hard to foresee what is coming in April or May since this information is classified so as not to give the enemy any chance to prepare for what is coming next. President Zelenskyy said it himself: “Russian forces still have time to leave — otherwise, we will destroy them.” At present, experts are asked not to talk about it, but the Ukrainian counteroffensive is looming, and the West will presumably give Ukraine anything it needs.
