Slovak President Zuzana Čaputová became the latest casualty of Slovakia’s increasingly toxic and chaotic politics, announcing on 20 June that she would not seek re-election when her current five-year term expires a year from now.

“Before announcing this decision, I had to estimate my strength for the potential six more years. And after very honest consideration, I know today that there would not be enough strength for another term,” she said in a brief statement to the press.
