Romania’s Presidential Election: European Alliances vs Authoritarian Drift
14 May 2025
In a week that saw the Czech Prime Minister meet the POTUS and the NATO Secretary General, Czech media continued to praise Petr Fiala’s successful foreign policy. But as he embarks on such trips abroad, important issues remain back at home, none of which will help Fiala’s already low domestic support.
Last week couldn’t have been much busier for Czech PM Petr Fiala.
To start the schedule, the Czech Prime Minister met President Joe Biden on Monday 15 April. In a press statement, the White House commended the Czech Republic for “the recent passage of legislation requiring it to spend at least 2% of its GDP on defence.”
President Biden also praised the $4.5bn deal the Czech Republic made earlier this year to purchase 24 US F-35s – a deal that “contributes to US jobs, bolsters the Czech Republic’s defence modernisation, and deepens the US-Czech defence relationship.”
