This move signals Poland’s intention to take the lead on one of the most contentious issues facing the European Union.
Last Saturday, Tusk’s announcement to limit some asylum rights of individuals who use violence to get through the Belarusian border sent shockwaves through the domestic and international public opinion. Then, just ahead of the leaders’ summit this week, The Guardian reported that more EU leaders are expected to back calls for offshore asylum centres to stop asylum seekers from reaching the bloc.
