Can Donald Tusk Unlock Serbia’s EU Path? – INTERVIEW
23 October 2024
Prominent Czech Senator says that the Czech Republic narrowly escaped the fate of Poland’s and Hungary’s media takeover and that more should be done to prevent it from happening in the future.
In Czech Senator David Smoljak’s (STAN) view, Czech public media narrowly escaped the fate of Hungarian and Polish media, which were turned into mouthpieces for the local governments. “We must change the system so that the media cannot be controlled by someone who wins one election.”
Was there a real danger that Czech public media would be in danger of having their independence reduced if the government headed by Andrej Babiš continued, similar to what happened in Poland and Hungary?
It certainly did. Andrej Babiš has never made his affection for Viktor Orbán and his policies secret. In fact, Babiš’s determination to control the media space began with the purchase of MF DNES and other media outlets. The public service media was still independent after the acquisition so he definitely wanted to gain influence there.
