21 November 2023
On 13 November we organised a closed-door roundtable at European Economic and Social Committee in Brussels. The discussion with representatives of the European Commission, the European Parliament, members of leading Brussels think-tanks, the media and academia as well as NGO representatives focused on the scenarios gathered in the policy report on How European Democracies Are to Survive a New Trump Age.
It is aimed to be an orientation point for the focused policy and public debate on the democratic security of the European Union in the coming years and beyond. The future democratic security framework for the EU will primarily depend on geostrategic circumstances and the ability of the West to uphold the beacon of freedom and democracy as guiding principles in domestic and foreign policy.
Therefore the EU democratic security initiatives remain susceptible both to the relations with the US and to internal coherence on the future of Ukraine. During a series of foresight workshops by a group of opinion leaders from civil society since the beginning of 2023 we have worked on four future directions synthesising plausible developments across two analytic lines. Now, we will be presenting the outcomes of these efforts in the form of scenarios.
