In a bold move to shield Polish media from democratic interference, PM Donald Tusk has classified major outlets TVN and Polsat as strategic companies, granting the government veto power over their sale. As Europe grapples with malign influence, this decision aims to fortify Poland’s information space – but its success hinges on balancing national security with press freedom.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced yesterday a new measure to classify major media outlets TVN and Polsat as strategic companies.
Under this designation, the Polish government will have the power to approve or block the sale of these companies. According to Tusk, the list – which will remain in place until the end of 2027 – aims to protect Polish media from ‘hostile takeovers’ and foreign influence, particularly from Russia.
