Amid US opposition, the natural gas pipeline Nord Stream 2 is about to be the latest and greatest addition to the Gazprom gas influence effort over Central and Eastern Europe. All hinges upon when the 11 billion euros pipeline built under the Baltic Sea and connecting to Germany will be ready.

Several projects are in the works: the Norway-Poland pipeline linking Norwegian natural gas fields to Danish and Polish markets along with increased natural gas delivered by the United States to Poland and Croatian LNG terminals as well as Azeri gas flowing to Europe.

Will these counterbalance the Russian state-owned energy company’s gas supply and the potential grip of the Kremlin over the region?

“Bad deal for Europe”

United States President Joe Biden signals continuity with the previous presidency regarding his stance on the Nord Stream 2 project, after portraying the Russia-backed gas pipeline construction to German shores as “a bad deal for Europe” on 16 February.
