A Forum of Missed Opportunity for the V4

An uncharacteristically pro-Western conference from Budapest

29 September 2022

Budapest’s mayor, Gergely Karácsony, invited the world to discuss ‘Building Sustainable Democracies.’ While many attended, representation from the V4 was lacking.

On 21 and 22 of September, an event quite uncharacteristic for Hungary was being held in the heart of Budapest. The mayor, Gergely Karácsony, invited experts and politicians from the V4 and around the world to participate in the Second annual Budapest Forum, which was focused on ‘Building Sustainable Democracies.’ Visegrad Insight was invited and attended for the full two days.

Editor’s Pick: Closer Cooperation Is the Silver Bullet to Visegrad’s Ongoing Dysfunction

The range of topics covered varied from EU foreign policy to the environment, from energy transition to Taiwan and Hong Kong. The event was opened by the mayor giving a speech in English warning against rightwing populism and promoting our collective responsibility to act against it. This forum seemed to be in part a way for the mayor to strive toward what he preached.
