Once lauded as Europe’s new power couple, Poland and Ukraine managed to turn their dispute over grain exports into a full diplomatic crisis this week, which, unless handled with moderation by both sides, could jeopardise Kyiv’s efforts to join the European Union.
The escalation, which saw the presidents of both countries trading some really harsh words, shocked many Poles, Ukrainians and international observers, who got used to seeing Poland as Kyiv’s leading ally in its struggle against Russian aggression.
