The EU’s new Media Freedom and Artificial Intelligence Acts will likely struggle to influence the countries that need them most. Their long-term impact in the CEE region will therefore depend on bold provisions against resistance and the ability to update legislation with political and technological advancements.
The majority of citizens in the Visegrád Group are concerned about the state of media freedom in their respective countries. On average, 58% of the group’s citizens express concern, but these numbers are highest in Slovakia and Hungary, at 65% and 62% respectively.
This is according to the 2024 Media Freedom Poll, which was released earlier today. The poll was conducted by MEDIAN, on behalf of the Prague-based Committee for Editorial Independence, and surveyed over 4,000 adult respondents across the V4 countries.
It shows that “citizens across Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary are acutely aware of the challenges faced by free journalism,” says Visegrad Insight Marcin Król Fellow Bartosz Wieliński.
