Several European nations hold elections this year while EU member states also elect the new European Parliament, which will determine the direction and leadership of the Union in the next four-year term

2024 is shaping up to be the biggest election year in history, with more than half the world’s citizens heading to the polls. Many of these elections will take place in Europe, where the election to the European Parliament in June comes as the EU faces unprecedented challenges in defence, enlargement, migration and internal reform.

The following is a chronological run-down of the elections taking place in Europe in 2024, and the top contenders contesting them.
